Personal Statement

My journey into the field of instructional design, development, and evaluation is a summit of diverse professional experiences and a consistent drive to create effective learning environments. As a Master of Science candidate in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation at Syracuse University, I am driven by a belief in the game-changing impact of well-structured and engaging educational experiences. This program has been instrumental in formalizing my understanding of how individuals learn and equipping me with the methodologies to design impactful solutions.

Throughout my career in higher education and journalism, I have consistently encountered scenarios where communication and learning effectiveness were paramount, yet often underdeveloped. My experiences in designing instructional materials and teaching diverse audiences often involved an intuitive application of what I now understand as core instructional design principles. Whether it was developing engaging course materials for undergraduate students, or structuring information for clarity in investigative reports, I was always seeking ways to make complex information accessible and actionable for my audience. These roles refined my abilities in content development, audience analysis, project coordination, and strategic planning, laying a solid foundation for my transition into dedicated instructional design.

The IDD&E program at Syracuse University has provided a robust framework for understanding the systematic processes behind effective instruction. I have strengthened my ability in areas such as cognitive learning theories, multimedia development, assessment strategies, and designing for digital environments. Through hands-on projects and rigorous coursework, I have learned to perform needs assessments, prototype interactive learning solutions, and evaluate program effectiveness. My academic interests lie in combining technology with culturally relevant methods to address the educational needs of varied populations, investigating how VR can be used to improve knowledge and intercultural competence of youth, and supporting design that affirms and enriches cultural identities, integrated with technology for individual-concerned learning experiences in the digital era, which matches perfectly with my passion for interdisciplinary learning and immersive education.

Equipped with an in-depth knowledge of learning theory and practical design skills, I am eager to contribute to designing curricula with immersive technologies for educational institutions, aiming to provide educational opportunities to varied communities. My goal is to apply these competencies to create learning solutions that are not only theoretically sound and technologically advanced but also deeply engaging and genuinely revolutionary for learners. As an educator with a background in literature, journalism, and communication, I am excited to contribute my unique skills and perspectives to the IDD&E community and further the mission of creating culturally affirming educational solutions.
