Topic: Fun Facts about Mid-Autumn Festival
Audience: Campus students.
Context: The project focuses on introducing the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important festivals in China, to both American and international students.
Intended Learning Outcome: The goal is to help students know more about the Mid-Autumn Festival and improve their intercultural communication skills throughout the learning process.
Analysis: I developed this microlearning module out of the following reasons.
At Syracuse University, the resources related to Chinese festivals, such as events and promotions, apply mostly to Chinese students, leaving a gap in intercultural engagement.
While many students express their interest in gaining a deeper cultural understanding, they are held back by language barriers and a lack of resources that explain the cultural significance of these traditions. This knowledge gap reduces opportunities for intercultural communication and limits students’ ability to engage meaningfully with diverse cultural practices, which is an essential skill in a globalized academic environment.
Design: The module covered the historical origins, evolution process and significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival. It also covered how people celebrate the Mid-Autumn across the world, followed up with 2 brief quizzes as a conclusion.
Development: The learning module is developed by Camtasia 2022. Visual components are treated by Canva Pro and Photoshop 2025.
Pilot test & revision: My prototype received useful feedbacks from peer review. Suggestions mainly focus on the background music and the quiz feature. I fixed the quiz feature, but left the background music blank as I could not find suitable and copyright-friendly music options.
Implementation:This micro eLearning module is going to be distributed on my personal website, and if possible, it could be utilized in other informal learning settings offered by other schools or departments, such as the Chinese Conversation Table, as a supplementary learning resource.
Evaluation: The effectiveness of the micro eLearning module would mainly be evaluated on user feedback and the completion rate. A survey would be provided one month after its distribution.
What is the role of technology in instructional design and development?
Technologies enable engaging learning experiences through tools like interactive video and allow personalized learning ways other than traditional classroom settings. Diverse learning needs and styles could be addressed through accessibly tools like screen readers and subtitles.
What lessons did you learn from microlearning design and development?
From my design process of the micro eLearning project, I realized that it’s important to keep the instructional content clear and concise, since microlearning is developed to deliver small and focused pieces of content. It’s also important to add interactive features like quizzes to make learning more fun and helps learners remember what they’ve learned.
